Santa Fe Style Decorating Ideas
Reveal day is finally here! Over the past several weeks, we've been detailing the southwestern-inspired interior of the Camino Haciendas home. Located in the beautiful city of Santa Fe, the home's design embodies the genuine spirit of the city. That is all thanks to the guidance of our adventuresome clients.
The homeowners are a Houston-based couple, and we completed work on their Uptown-area condo a few years ago. This is the third home we have designed for them, and we understand their aesthetic. However, with this being their secondary residence, our clients were hoping for a space that truly connected to the Santa Fean landscape and culture. They encouraged us to consider themed rooms, a suggestion we embraced with full hearts.
Why is Santa Fe so deeply personal for this duo? The husband is a New Mexico native, and he has family there that he sees often – maybe more often with the completion of this lovely home! He is a University of New Mexico alum and even named his company after the famous Plaza in Santa Fe. Needless to say, this home was destined to honor the Land of Enchantment.
Our Santa Fe Interior Design Concept
Because the design was so regionally specific, we had to learn about the culture and themes of Santa Fe to truly understand what the client wanted. The design team spent time exploring the history and culture of Santa Fe before developing our design concept. Pueblo Indians had inhabited the area for a millennium before Spanish colonialists moved into the territory. In the 19th Century, Americans traveled from Missouri along the Santa Fe Trail, bringing yet another culture through New Mexico. This diverse assembly gave birth to a locale that is respectful of its history, its people, and its landscape.
We were determined to honor each of these groups through design. Throughout the home you will find rooms dedicated to a particular piece of Santa Fe's history. From the Saints Room (and the Spaniards' Catholic influence) to the Lobo Room (an homage to one of the state's most recognizable creatures), Camino pays tribute to Santa Fe with a celebration of color, pattern, and bold artworks.
Our Favorite Spaces…
One of the best parts of this home is actually the exterior! With 6 portals, or porticos, Camino embraces the outdoors with living spaces that allow you to enjoy the landscape. Views of the Sangre de Cristo mountains burst into flame during sunrise and sunset. And the home provides ample spots to watch the sky at any time.
The Tipi Room
While it would sound like an awkward request in any other interior, having a benchmade tipi in Camino's media room made perfect sense. There are several tipi camps near Taos, north of Santa Fe. We wanted to create an authentic piece that would look and fit perfectly into the room's design. We located an artisan who made tipis, and as luck would have it, one of the pieces fit the room not only in size, but in color as well.
The Dining Room
The interior design of the dining room is representative of the Spanish influence in Sante Fe. We selected a stunning linear iron chandelier from Circa Lighting to place above the wood dining table from Century Furniture. The head chairs upholstered in Kravet fabric and embellished with Schumacher trim add a layer of richness to the design. Neutral dining chairs keep this Spanish style design modern and fresh. To tie in the bold colors of the art work, we selected a rug from Rugmart featuring a tribal inspired pattern.
The Living Room
In the living room, we wanted to design a warm, welcoming space for the family to gather together. We chose a high-performance Revolution Fabric for the sectional, so they never have to worry about spills or stains ruining the furniture. Small cocktail tables from Four Hands with benchmade-installed inlays from Sherpa Stone give guests the perfect spot for resting a drink. I love the textural contrast they add to the room!
Floor pillows upholstered in Turkish carpet fabric invite you to sit down and relax, while tying in the color palette of the Matt Camron area rug. To carry the Spanish influence through the design, we selected a cocktail table from Mediterrania Home and Bishop chair from Casa Rosina for the living room. (The builder referred us to this local shop in Santa Fe!) Art from Mecox Gardens and a ladder we sourced directly from Mexico add the perfect finishing touch to this family's gathering place.
The Lobo Room
When we saw this bed from Noir Furniture, we knew it would be perfect for the Lobo inspired guest bedroom. The frame mirrors the curves in the wallcovering design and the hand-rubbed finish gives it an old-world feel. A pair of bedside tables from Bernhardt anchor the bedframe, creating a beautiful focal point. The hide and leather pouf from Surya pays homage to the ranchers, who were the first American settlers coming west. A bright red traditional, vintage kilim rug gives the design a collected feel.
The Saints Room
Known as the Saints room, the second guest bedroom celebrates the beauty of the sunrise. The Anthropologie bed and Aidan Gray mirror imitate the curve of the rising sun peeking over the landscape. Crisp white drapery by Joseph Noble with Fabricut trim allows plenty of light in while still maintaining the room's privacy. The bench from Noir Furniture gives guests a perfect spot to enjoy a cup of coffee and watch the sunrise. Colorful bedding and bold decorative pillows create a warm, perfectly polished bedroom.
The Master Retreat
The focal point of the master bedroom is a wood and wrought iron bed from The Arrangment. It has a very regal feel to it – like something you would find in a Spanish castle. The antique-finish of the John Richard mirrors flanking the bed call to mind clouds moving across the New Mexico sky. These beautiful Currey & Company table lamps tie the mirror's deep, earth tones in with the lighter color palette of the rug and bedding.
I hope you enjoyed the full reveal of this gorgeous home! From the moment you enter, you can feel the beauty and history of Santa Fe surrounding you.
